George Allen boasts big cash edge over GOP foes

The latest fundraising reports for Virginia’s U.S. Senate race are in, and they confirm what has appeared clear for awhile — George Allen is the clear front-runner for the Republican nod.

Allen, the former governor and senator, announced two weeks ago that he had raised $1.4 million in the first three months of 2012 and had nearly $2.7 million on hand as of March 31. That put him behind Democratic nominee Timothy M. Kaine, who took in $2.2 million over the same period and had more than $4.4 million in the bank.

But Allen’s totals still put him miles ahead of his three Republican opponents. Former Virginia Tea Party Patriots head Jamie Radtke reported to the Federal Election Commission raising $161,000, her best quarterly total yet, with $80,000 left in the bank.

Del. Bob Marshall (Prince William), who entered the race in mid-January, has raised $23,000 and loaned his campaign $10,000, ending March with $12,000 in the bank as he focused on collecting signatures to make the ballot. A spokesman for the fourth candidate, Bishop Earl Jackson, did not have his fundraising numbers available as of this posting.
