Democrats Sadler, Yarbrough meet in Senate debate

DALLAS (AP) — Two Democratic U.S. Senate hopefuls are questioning each other’s qualifications in a debate being taped for television airways.

Attorney Paul Sadler served in the Texas House from 1991 until 2003. He shares the stage at public television station KERA’s Dallas studios Tuesday with political unknown Grady Yarbrough, who has run previously as a Democrat and a Republican.

Sadler said three candidates are qualified to serve in the Senate, himself and two Republicans, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and former Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert. Dewhurst awaits a GOP runoff against former solicitor general Ted Cruz.

Sadler and Yarbrough generally agree on support for the national health care overhaul, same-sex marriage and keeping the present Social Security eligibility age.

Yarbrough suggested building a border fence like the “Berlin Wall,” which Sadler called “offensive.”
