It’s been only a week since Arizona’s Joe Arpaio, the “World’s Toughest Sheriff,” earned Knucklehead of the Week honors for sending his taxpayer-funded deputies on a cross-country goose chase for President Obama’s birthplace bona fides.
Since then, we’ve watched Mitt Romney make nice with Donald Trump, undisputed leader of the “birther” movement’s jet set.
Now, here’s Peter Hoekstra, the former Michigan congressman now running for a Senate seat, with a grand plan to launch a new federal government panel whose sole job would be to ensure that future presidential candidates are natural-born citizens and eligible to occupy the White House.
“This has nothing to do about Barack Obama,” Hoekstra told CNN last week. “This has nothing to do about the past. This is all looking forward.”
Of course not.
Did we mention that Hoekstra, a Republican, believes the issue of Obama’s birthplace is settled only because John McCain wouldn’t make an issue of it during the 2008 race? Or the oddity that this small-government GOPer wants to add to the federal bureaucracy?
Maybe we’re trolling the “birther” waters for knuckleheads too often. But do they have to make it so easy?
