PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Republican challenger Barry Hinckley accused U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse Tuesday of practicing “serial hypocrisy” by accepting campaign donations from “special interests” while railing against the influence of big money in political campaigns.
In a news conference outside Whitehouse’s Providence office, Hinckley said the Democratic incumbent has accepted more than $2 million from special interests during his career in politics.
“I’m left wondering … how someone could take two million dollars from the special interests when he’s crying out against special-interest money,” Hinckley said.
Hinckley also said Whitehouse sponsored bills on behalf of certain industries after accepting donations. When asked for details, his campaign said it would reveal the bills later this week.
There was no immediate comment from the Whitehouse campaign.
